Driving in Stockholm-Arlanda

Driving in and out of Stockholm is easy and safe, as roads are well maintained, and the majority of drivers follow traffic rules. However, there are some particularities that apply when driving in Sweden that you'll need to bear in mind.

Although Stockholm's winters are mild compared to other parts of Sweden, snow tires with a minimum tread depth of 3 mm are required from December 1st through March 31st; otherwise, fines apply. Rental cars will come equipped with the required tires.

Always check the weather forecast and road conditions before getting in your car during a winter trip since some streets may be closed to traffic, even in Stockholm. You can check real-time road conditions using the Trafikverket website, but since it's only in Swedish, you may need help from a local or your hotel receptionist.

Headlights must be on at all times, including during the day. On bright days, low beam headlights are enough. Make sure to remember, or you risk a fine.

There are no toll roads in the vicinity of Stockholm-Arlanda, but you may have to pay a congestion charge while driving in downtown Stockholm. The amount varies depending on the time of the year and the hour of the day, but in most cases, it's applicable between 6:00 am and 6:30 pm. The congestion charge is waived on public holidays and in July. The fee will be charged to the car rental company, and you can settle the bill when you return the vehicle.

Maximum speeds are determined by road conditions, so they can vary at any given time based on weather and other hazards. If no hazards are present, the following guidelines apply: 110-120 km/h on freeways, 70 km/h on non-urban roads and 50 km/h on urban roads. The applicable speed limit is always posted, so keep an eye on the signs.

On the Stockholm Beltway, a partly underground urban freeway, the speed limit varies between 50 and 70 km/h. Speeding violations are punished with very high fines, and depending on the circumstances speeding can also lead to legal charges and license suspension for up to 36 months.
